Qvevri – The Matrix
At the dawn of civilization, the symbol of our national identity—the vine—emerged in Georgia alongside the development of agriculture. The Shulaveri-Shomutepe Neolithic culture (6th millennium BC) in Kvemo Kartli revealed the world’s oldest domesticated grape seeds (vitis vinifera). Along with the vine, evidence of cultivated wheat from the same period has also been found. The antiquity of vine and wheat in Georgia is complemented by the remarkable diversity of their varieties (of the world’s four thousand grape varieties, five hundred are found in Georgia) and by sophisticated agricultural knowledge. Indeed, from ancient times, we have been a nation of bread and wine.
